John Maplesden has presented a paper to the HazardEx Conference and Exhibition describing the dangers of and precautions needed to guard against arc flash injury

John Maplesden, the MD of TAS Engineering Consultants presented the paper, entitled "Risk Control of Mitigation Measures against Arc Flash Incidents".

This describes how electric arcs formed during fault conditions can pose a significant risk to both personnel and plant, and shows how injuries can be caused by the intense thermal radiation, pressure waves and noxious gases produced by arcs, how switchgear can be damaged and be out of operation for significant periods.

There is a growing recognition of the hazard in the UK and operators are increasingly implementing appropriate risk control and mitigation measures.

The paper described a practical three step approach to risk management in this area, and give examples that operators can easily adopt.

Case studies and examples were used throughout, to illustrate the effects of arcing and the techniques proposed to manage the risk.

TAS Engineering Consultants are able to provide advice on the precautions needed to avoid the risks and hazards from arc flash on industrial plant.
