Sempell valves on RWE high efficiency power plants

A Tyco Flow Controls product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Dec 4, 2007

Sempell AG, a part of Tyco Flow Control, has been awarded a USD22M contract from RWE for high pressure steam valves on their lignite power plant projects

In the largest ever contract for a conventional power plant since the company foundation around 130 years ago, the project will see Sempell supply practically all control and isolating valves for the high pressure turbine, boiler and plant balance systems for the RWE BOA 2 and 3 initiative.

As part of a comprehensive package for the power generation sector, Sempell was able to offer custom-made valve know-how to withstand the extremely high temperatures and pressures required to achieve maximum efficiency from lignite.

At Neurath for example, the new systems will achieve an efficiency of over 43%, as compared to the old units which achieved 31%.

In achieving an electrical output of 1,100 MW per unit, it will become the largest lignite plant in the world.

To meet the necessary design criteria and guarantee future reliability in this critical application Sempell will be employing a new high alloy steel for the first time.

The project will involve working in close cooperation with German forgings and pipe manufacturers to qualify and produce this material.

Sempell boasts a state-of-the-art, high-quality German manufacturing facility, innovative planning and design, as well as excellent service and maintenance programmes all of which influenced RWE - the largest producer of electricity in Germany.

Sempell delivers control, safety relief and isolation valves to conventional and nuclear power plants as well as the chemical industry.

The company offers its customer optimal solutions in all cases where high pressure, extreme temperatures and critical properties are involved and especially where safety considerations are paramount.

In addition to its standard delivery programme which covers nearly all areas, Sempell develops and manufactures customised valves.

Predictions by leading energy economists indicate that fossil fuels will continue to play a critical role in future energy production around the world and this is driving the market strongly at present.

With manufacturers such as Sempell providing valves specifically designed for use in the steam circuits of power plants, Tyco Flow Control has been able to achieve a market share of more than 90% in this segment in Germany for new plants.

Long term supply contracts between Sempell and some of the largest energy producers and OEMs such as RWE, Vattenfall, Siemens and Alstom indicate that this will continue over the next 4-6 years.
