Solving process problems with Profibus

A The Profibus Group product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Dec 7, 2004

A recent seminar showed why Profibus is used so extensively in process and hybrid industry applications and how it addresses the key issues facing the process industry today

The recent Process and Hybrid industry seminar organised by the UK Profibus Group was very well attended by users from a wide range of industries including water, pharma, dairy, beverage, oil and gas and pet food, reports Profibus UK Chairman Bob Squirrell.

"The seminar showed why Profibus is used so extensively in process and hybrid industry applications and how it addresses the key issues facing the process industry today, such as Asset Management, Interoperability and Inter-changeability, and Universal Engineering Tools" said Squirrell.

The seminar showed in clear terms how organisations in the process and hybrid industries can benefit from taking a fresh look at open control system design in process environments.

Speakers included Vasileos Lakkas of The Profibus Competence Centre, Mike O'Neill of Hawke Fieldbus and technical experts from Endress + Hauser and Siemens.

The event was supported by live demonstrations that clearly illustrated each of the points covered.

Profibus-PA (Process Automation) is a state of the art digital fieldbus designed specifically to address the needs of the process industries.

It replaces or works in conjunction with conventional 4-20mA technology, significantly lowering capital expenditure on installation and offering unprecedented, centralised access to instrumentation and field device information.

Many additional practical benefits are derived from its use especially in hazardous areas.

For hybrid applications Profibus PA is used in conjunction with its high-speed (up to 12MBaud) relation Profibus DP, which is optimised for handling the upstream and downstream aspects characteristic of hybrid industries.

Presentations from the seminar can be downloaded from the Profibus International Web site.
