Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, announces the availability of basic educational packages for Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometers
For use in classroom or teaching laboratory environments, the experiments offer an insight into the theory and operation of FT-IR spectroscopy and are suitable for use in undergraduate, technical and scientific programmes The new packages are an integral part of the wide range of Thermo Fisher Scientific educational and technical support offerings and are ideal for use with the Thermo Scientific Nicolet IR100 and IR200 spectrometers

Easy to use, the educational packages require only an FT-IR spectrometer and basic sampling accessories such as transmission cells or an ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance) accessory.
Initial experiments introduce students to FT-IR spectroscopy, providing the opportunity to discuss the FT-IR process, examine functional groups and present quantitative analysis.
Application-specific experiments are also covered, focusing on isomer concepts, analysing HCI gas, comparing classes of recycling plastics and isolation and identification of essential oils.
The packages are available to download in PDF format from the website.
The Thermo Scientific Nicolet IR series spectrometers are ideal teaching instruments.
The Nicolet IR100 is a complete FT-IR system including an integrated computer operating with intuitive Thermo Scientific Encompass software.
An integrated FT-IR system eliminates the distractions, maintenance and risks that operating a separate computer system entails.
Featuring cost and operational benefits identical to the IR100, the Nicolet IR200 system provides the ability to support a separate PC and computer monitor if needed.
The Nicolet IR100 and IR200 systems both accept sampling accessories including ATR, speeding up sample preparation and minimising clean-up.
The instruments are compact in size, occupying little space in the laboratory, and the light weight means that the IR100 and IR200 can be manually lifted and shared between laboratories, lowering cost of ownership.
Easy-to-use Encompass software with touch-screen options is also included, rendering the systems ideal for everyday use.
