Transmitton has gone Underground with its latest project! The rail software control systems company has just delivered a refurbishment scheme at Northfields Station, on the Heathrow Airport branch of the Piccadilly Line.
As part of the overall Tube Lines Station Modernisation program, the Transmitton contract was to design and deliver the new communications infrastructure to the site.
At the heart of the design is a new Station Operations Room (SOR) incorporating a modern desk and console housing the latest 'touch screen' controlled Human Computer Interface (HCI) for operating station sub-systems on a day-to-day basis.
This cutting-edge feature uses modern ergonomic techniques so that operational skills can be acquired quickly.
Upgraded CCTV, PA/VA, PC DVA, Help Point and Customer Information systems are all part of in the new set-up.
Northfields is one of the first London Underground stations to be refurbished under the Public Private Partnership.
Tube Lines is responsible for rebuilding the Tube busiest lines: the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines and is refurbishing 97 of its 100 stations during the first 7.5 years of the PPP contract.
Work on ten stations has been completed, including Northfields, with activities underway at fifteen other stations.
Leicestershire-based Transmitton won the prestigious design contract for Northfields in March 2003, after working with London Underground on the Jubilee Line Extension.
The implementation contract was awarded early in 2004, work began on site last November with final completion this month.
As well as supplying the station sub-systems Transmitton has overseen equipment installation while working alongside main contractor Gleeson MCL and installation contractor Fone Alarm.
An extensive installation strategy ensured that the work in progress did not prevent public access as the station remained in use while work took place.
During the design phase, Transmitton carried out a full survey of the station to make sure that the location of equipment would produce performance results in line with latest London Underground standards.
Transmitton managing director Ian Wright said: "We are delighted to have won and completed this prestigious contract.
We have earned a strong reputation with London Underground, having successfully completed the Jubilee line project and gained up-to-the-minute experience of working on the Underground network".
Other recent key rail contracts for Transmitton have included: Kings Cross Station Redevelopment, Ryde Esplanade and Pierhead stations on the Isle of Wight, London St Pancras interim station, Southern Region Power Supply Upgrade, East Coast Mainline, Docklands Light Railway and London City Airport extension.
Transmitton continues to strengthen its position in the UK and has just won the Enterprise Through Innovation award and been voted Business of the Year in the 2005 Leicestershire Business Awards.
