Ramps speed up loading at waste
management plant
A Thorworld Industries mobile yard ramp is playing a key role at a busy Materials Recovery Facility operated by Veolia Environmental Services at its integrated waste management site in Rainham, Essex
Incoming mixed recyclable material, which includes paper and card, plastic bottles, and cans, is separated before being made up into bales weighing up to one tonne As the MRF facility has no loading bay, fork lift trucks drive up the Thorworld ramp to place bales of the separated material into container trucks for onward transit to reprocessing plants in the UK and overseas

The plant operates a three shift system, five days a week, handling around 50,000 tonnes of recyclable waste material annually.
Up to 15 container trucks are loaded via the ramp every 24 hours.

The 10,000 kg (10 tonne) capacity ramp has an overall length of 12.2m and a useable width of 2.25m.
With a robust steel superstructure, using solid beam construction, it is hydraulically operated down to 890mm, and has a serrated open grid deck for positive traction in all weather conditions.
A hand-operated hydraulic pump quickly raises it to the required height, and it features built-in side safety rails.
Veolia has a second identical Thorworld ramp for use on periodic occasions when the main ramp might need servicing, thus completely avoiding any possible down-time.
This is where the built-in tow bar on each ramp proves a major asset, as they can be easily and speedily moved in and out of position by fork lift.
Thorworld mobile yard ramps are ruggedly built and ideal for the fast loading and unloading of vehicle trailers and containers by fork truck - particularly where there is no raised loading dock.
They are designed and tested to meet the latest European quality and safety standards and directives, as well as bearing the CE mark.
Heights range from 890 to 1,680mm.
To keep them in top condition and comply with appropriate legislation, Thorworld provides a comprehensive service and maintenance back-up facility.
Available as Deluxe and Economy models, with 7,000 kg, 10,000 kg, 12,000 kg or 15,000 kg capacities, they can be purchased outright, or rented through the company's specialist RentARamp operation with a sale or return option.
Bespoke models can also be supplied to meet individual customer requirements.
Thorworld reports a big increase in demand for its mobile yard ramps from recycling companies and has already supplied other major recyclers including Biffa Waste Services, SCA Recycling and Smurfit Recycling, as well as numerous smaller recycling businesses throughout the UK.
