TTE apprentice Scott Dunnakey has been named as one of the best process industry students in the UK, after two years on placement at Teesside Power Station

TTE apprentice Scott Dunnakey has been named as one of the best process industry students in the UK Middlesbrough-born Scott has been awarded the Salters Institute City and Guilds Process Plant Operations (PPO) Level 3 prize, which is presented to the student with the best PPO grades in the country

Scott, 21, who is now studying towards a Chemical Technology Foundation Degree at Teesside University, collected the award at prestigious ceremony at the Salters Institute in London.

The PPO programme is designed for trainees or adults already working as process operators.

It provides the broad underpinning knowledge required for candidates in the processing industry.

The Salters' Institute of Industrial Chemistry aims to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young, and to encourage careers in the teaching of chemistry and in the UK chemical and allied industries.

Scott spent four years with the Middlesbrough-based TTE Technical Training Group where he achieved his Process Operations Advanced Modern Apprenticeship.

It was during this time that Scott was awarded a distinction grade for his PPO Level 3 study, which made him eligible for the Salters' Industries awards.

During his time with TTE, Scott also spent two years on placement at Teesside Power Station.

In 2002 Scott became the first operations apprentice to be sponsored by PX at the power plant.

Scott said: "In addition to winning this award the apprenticeship route has already paid off for me by helping me secure my place at Teesside University.

I joined TTE because I felt it would help me obtain a more challenging career.

One of the most appealing aspects of apprenticeships is the mixture of theoretical and practical studies.

That blend has really helped me apply what I have learned both in the workplace and at university".

Keith Hunter, Managing Director of The TTE Technical Training Group, said: "Scott's achievement demonstrates the calibre of young people we have at TTE who are motivated and committed to achieving a successful career in industry.

He is also a perfect example of how an apprenticeship can be a valid route to a university degree.

The Salters' Institute award is extremely prestigious and is a well-respected award in the chemical industry and everyone at TTE is very proud of Scott.".
