Going with the flow at Solidex
Conference
Reports of bulk materials not flowing reliably from storage bins are all too frequent in industry: silo design will be the subject of one of the papers at the Solidex Knowledge Conference in October
Reports of bulk materials not flowing reliably from storage bins are all too frequent in industry This often results in hoppers being hammered out of shape or plant filled with the noise from vibrators that have been introduced in an attempt to promote flow

Such problems are normally the result of bins and silos being designed on the basis of structural or space economy.
This is a false 'economy' since it can result in problems such as plant downtime through flow stoppages, poor product quality from particle segregation or degradation, lack of design capacity and uncontrollable flow.
In turn, this often leads to expensive redesigns, modifications and the addition of flow promoting devices.
By the application of well proven techniques these problems can be eliminated, or at least minimised, at the design stage of such facilities.
As a consequence, plants can operate reliably and with improved product quality.
By this way capital investment in storage and associated handling equipment is optimised.
Richard Furnish from the Wolfson Centre will take an in depth look at these issues within his presentation "Design and re-design of hoppers and silos for reliable discharge" at the Solidex Knowledge Conference 13th October 2004, Hanover International Hotel, Hinkley, Leicestershire.
The purpose of this session is to provide attendees with an insight into the problems that can result from poor design and the techniques that may be employed to ensure reliable operation of such storage facilities.
Topics to be covered include flow problems, flow patterns, flow properties, design techniques, discharge rates, feeders and the role of flow promotion devices.
The session is intended for engineers and plant managers who are currently experiencing problems with storage facilities, and engineers responsible for investment in new plants wishing to avoid such problems.
The Solidex Knowledge Conference, organised by SHAPA and Solids and Bulk Magazine, is a low cost one day conference tackling the issues within the solids and bulk handling industry.
