The use of flexible packaging to transport, distribute and market products such as chemicals, minerals, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, animal feeds has expanded rapidly, and will be discussed at Solidex

The use of flexible packaging to transport, distribute and market products such as chemicals, minerals, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, animal feeds, fertilizers, grain, plastics, cement, growing media, horticultural products and building materials has expanded rapidly over the past decade and this trend is set to continue to rise It plays a vital role in any supply chain and can be used effectively for short, medium or long distance transportation by air, sea, road or rail

Flexible packaging can be a substitute for, or complementary to, bulk transportation and storage, providing fast availability of the right product at any given time - with minimum stock holding.

There is no doubt that the key to successful industrial bag filling and handling lies in effective system integration.

Optimising speed without compromising accuracy and reliability is a multi-functional task, relying on critical sectors of the overall line to work in harmony.

Incompatibility in equipment will inevitably lead to product spillage, costly unexpected material and packaging losses, premature breakdowns, bottlenecks and expected savings not being achieved-all resulting in frustration and loss of production.

Although modern electronics and computer technology are playing an increasingly important role in today's bagging systems, sound mechanical engineering innovation is fundamental to ensuring precision, speed and above all reliability.

Equipment ranges from individual filling stations, up to fully integrated high speed bagging lines, incorporating peripherals such as feeders, blenders, automatic bag placers, bag stretchers, de-aerators, sealers, stitchers, conveyors, palletisers and shrink wrappers.

Bagging technology includes open mouth baggers, valve packers, form fill and seal equipment and balers.

A presentation by Mark Beales, from Chronos Richardson at the Solidex Knowledge Conference 13th October 2004, Hanover International Hotel, Hinkley, Leicestershire will examine the critical design/operational requirements for the different modules within a modern bagging line to ensure optimum integration.

It will include an overview of the different bagging technologies (when and where to use them) and review the role of peripherals including feeders, weighers, bag placers, bag sealers, possing devices and palletisers.

The Solidex Knowledge Conference organised by SHAPA and Solids and Bulk Magazine is a low cost one day conference tackling the issues within the solids and bulk handling industry.
