For the 16th International Rheinland Award for Environmental Protection, the prize has been awarded to Prof Dr Joachim Luther, an internationally recognised solar energy expert

For the 16th International Rheinland Award for Environmental Protection, the prize has been awarded to Prof Dr Joachim Luther, head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Technology, and Physics Professor at the University of Freiburg (Germany).

This internationally-recognised solar energy expert has received the award for his outstanding, practically-oriented research in solar energy technology as a modern energy source, and for his dedication to his work as head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Technology.

"We are extremely honoured," said TUV Rheinland Group President and CEO Prof Dr Bruno O Braun, "to be able to bestow such an award on a renowned and innovative scientist like Prof Luther, who been committed for many years to researching regenerative energy sources." TUV Rheinland Group has awarded the International Rheinland Award for Environmental Protection including a 25,000 Euros grant since 1974.

A panel of eleven jurors from business, science, and politics chose Prof Luther from an international circle of candidates.
