Tetra Pak, the world leader in food processing and packaging solutions, has announced the certification of its carton packages produced in its two plants in Brazil by the Forest Stewardship Council

The Brazilian certification means that all wood fibres in the entire supply chain - from the forest to the retail shelf - comes from FSC certified, well managed forests and controlled sources In Brazil, the wood fibre used for Tetra Pak cardboards come from certified forests

"Tetra Pak strongly believes that being environmentally responsible is the basis of good business.

The launching of the FSC label on Tetra Pak packages is a result of our continuous effort to protect the environment in which we operate" said Paulo Nigro, President Tetra Pak Brazil.

"Now, our customers can have the option of using the FSC label on their packages and the environment positioning of their brands will be evident for the consumer".

Added Nils Bjorkman, Executive Vice President, Commercial Operations, Tetra Pak: "This represents another step in a long and elaborate process of having third party certification for the entire value chain of our all our packages.

Our ultimate goal is to have all the paper in our packaging certified to the highest standard - as set by the FSC".

Klabin, the sole Tetra Pak paperboard supplier in Brazil, was the Tetra Pak partner in the certification process.

As the largest paperboard producer and exporter in Brazil, Klabin is a pioneer FSC certification, having obtained certification for forest management in 1998.

In 2005 the entire cardboard and kraftliner production chain was certified and, in the following year, industrial bag production also received the FSC label.

By 2007, having added certification of its corrugated cardboard paper and recycled paper production, Klabin achieved FSC certification for 100% of its production processes.

"The partnership with Tetra Pak confirms the commitment the two companies have toward ensuring responsible, sustainable forest management.

That means that at the very start of the production process we make sure our raw materials come from forests which are socially fair, environmentally sound and economically viable" said Reinoldo Poarnbacher, general director for Klabin.

All Tetra Pak packages are sustainable: Some 75% of the packaging material used come from renewable sources, and they are 100% recyclable.

In addition, the format of the carton packages, its reduced weight and its transportation, storage and distribution systems means high efficiency in reducing energy consumption, storage space, and an overall lower CO2 impact than several alternative packaging solutions.

The first Tetra Pak package with the FSC certification label, was the Tetra Recart, for canned food.

In Brazil, the Tetra Recart packages are also certified and can be found in retailers, packing peas, corns, vegetable mix, chickpeas and beans.

Tetra Pak undertakes in the country a series of environmental actions to stimulate the entire recycling chain and the curbside collection.

This work includes investments in environmental education programmes, in development of recycling technologies and re-passing of these technologies to recycling companies, key actions that increase the curbside collection and the rate of packages recycling.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization which sets standards for the responsible forest management and traceability of the material produced.
