Tracer has recently completed an EPC project to provide a turnkey electric heat-tracing system for frost protection at the United Utilities Liverpool waste water treatment works at Sandon Dock

Tracer, the worldwide engineering and construction services arm of Tyco Thermal Controls, has recently completed an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) project to provide a turnkey electric heat-tracing system for frost protection at the United Utilities Liverpool waste water treatment works, Sandon Dock In the execution of this project Tracer once again demonstrated its expertise as a full heat-tracing integrator - providing the complete system design and then managing the multi-discipline interfaces required to engineer and install it and offering the customer a single point of responsibility for the whole project

The heat-tracing system was required to prevent the contents of polymer dosing lines from freezing as they pass outdoors from the main chemical building to the Actiflo and Multiflo Treatment Streams installed by OTV, the specialist process contractor on this phase of the Sandon Dock Project.

Tracer was commissioned to provide detailed engineering design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of an electrical heat-tracing system, including the heating tapes and components, power cables and associated traywork, control panel plus thermal insulation and cladding.

An innovative design approach was required to protect the dosing lines - flexible hoses installed within secondary containment troughs accommodating 2No pipes (2 way), 3No pipes (3 way) and 4No pipes (4 way) - yet allowing access for maintenance by United Utilities operational staff.

Tracer had to handle various combinations of trough, which needed to be enclosed as a single heated, insulated and clad system.

It met the challenge by installing Raychem self-regulating heaters in metal channels to provide indirect heat within a removable insulated and weatherproof envelope.

The decision was taken to heat-trace and insulate in this way because there was insufficient space to treat each trough individually and also allow easy removal of the lids of the troughs for maintenance.

By installing the heating tapes in metal channels running alongside the various troughs a space heating effect has been created within the envelope, as opposed to having the heating tape physically attached to each trough.

Worldwide experience, expertise and the extensive Raychem, Isopad, Pyrotenax and DigiTrace branded product ranges in Tyco Thermal Controls portfolio that enables Tracer to offer a service as a full heat management systems (HMS) integrator.

It will provide expertise in optimising the complete system design and then managing the multi-discipline interfaces required to engineer and install it, whilst offering the customer a single point of responsibility for the whole project.

With early project involvement Tracer can ensure there is cost-optimisation at every stage by.

* Designing and constructing a fully integrated system.

* Optimising specifications and managing a reduced number of costly interfaces for all aspects of the HMS.

* Heat-tracing, power distribution, insulation, control and monitoring etc.

This technical expertise, together with logistical efficiency and an excellent safety record, is behind the Tracer reputation for successfully delivering even the largest and most complex requirements on-time and on-budget, anywhere in the world.

Upon commissioning, the customer takes possession of a complete quality assured system backed by a Warm Pipe Warranty and on-going 'local' support once the system is up and running.
