Hayman Award goes to new UKWF President

The prize for the best student on the 2006 UWIC course in the weighing aspects of legal metrology is awarded to the Federation's new president, Tony Mellor of Mettler Toldeo - Leading by example!

The UKWF recently held a very successful regional meeting in the shadow of Royal Naval aircraft old and new at the Yeovilton Air Museum.

At the end of a lively and informative meeting, this year's students who successfully completed the UWIC course in the weighing aspects of legal metrology were presented with their Certificates of Competence.

This joint training initiative, now in its third year, has been set up between the UK Weighing Federation and the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff (UWIC).

The certificates were awarded by course supervisor Andy Hayward and each year the panel of examiners select the best student to receive the Hayman Award.

By a unanimous decision, this year's winner of the coveted prize was none other than the Federation's newly elected president Tony Mellor of Mettler Toldeo.

The name of the winner was a closely guarded secret until the actual presentation and a very surprised, if not somewhat embarrassed, Tony graciously accepted the engraved plated hand weight and bottle of champagne from Colin Hayman.

Colin, who was MD of Taunton based Westco Bilanciai before retiring last year, has been one of the main driving forces in setting up this training initiative.

The UWIC course, which is open to UKWF members and non-members alike, is aimed at sales and service personnel within the weighing industry.

It was established to address the concern that there was no formalised training for people involved in this vitally important industry.

The training will ensure that customers can have confidence in using companies whose personnel have achieved this national qualification, knowing that their service provider will have a high-level of up-to-date legal metrology knowledge.
