There is currently widespread misinformation and misunderstanding concerning UV light health and safety issues.

In order to provide the facts, a new publication has just been released by UV Light Technology of Birmingham entitled 'Safety First with UV Light' - a practical guide and record for risk assessment of exposure to UV light emissions from artificial sources in the workplace.

UV light is all around us, occurring naturally from the sun and produced artificially for many industrial, commercial, public service and medical applications.

Indeed, there is hardly an area of daily life where UV light technology has not contributed in some way.

It is well established and generally agreed, that low level exposure to UV light provides some health benefits, for example synthesis of Vitamin D.

However, over exposure to UV light may cause injuries and ill health in the short and long term.

The crucial question is always, how much UV light will result in over exposure.

The publication is split into two parts: Part 1 provides information and guidance on assessing the level of risk for potential adverse health effects arising, or likely to arise, from exposure to UV light emissions from artificial sources and appropriate control measures to minimise risks.

Part 2 provides a template for recording the risk assessment.

Content includes.

* Definition and classification of UV light.

* Adverse health effects associated with over exposure to UV light.

* UV light exposure limit values adopted in the UK by the Health Protection Agency (Radiation Protection Division) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

* Health Protection Agency recommendations.

* Control measures for protection against over exposure to UV light.

* Risk assessment.

UV Light Technology are also running a series of one day training courses on UV light safety throughout 2006.

UV Light Technology offer an extensive range of health and safety products for use in conjunction with their UV light equipment, these include: UV eye and face protection, UV bulb change kit.
