The core electronics has a power control board to specify activity/sleep modes from typically internal batteries, a main microprocessor, and memory and communications boards.
This core unit automatically detects which sensors are fitted, using a "plug and play" approach, and controls the sampling regime for each sensor, which can involve sampling at fixed time intervals, or controlled by regular depth pressure increments, for example.
Central processor control allows some features unique to the Valeport product - such as true synchronised sampling, where each sensor is read at exactly the same instant rather than in sequence.
There is also a highly configurable "Conditional Sampling" regime, where specific data samples are only triggered by set point trips from another sensor output.
A water bottle trigger is available on the basis of set points related to any sensor output, or by manual operator intervention.
The Oceanographic and water quality sensors offered for use in MIDAS include Valeport conductivity, pressure and temperature sensors, and sensors from other reputable manufacturers for turbidity, DO, pH, ORP, a fluorometer or a photosynthetically active radiation sensor.
The unit is capable of accepting other sensors to suit customers requirements, whether environmental for air quality or wind, or industrial for effluent/open channel flow rate, water level etc MIDAS can be applied to industrial or municipal water monitoring, general environmental monitoring and sampling, or industrial data collection.
Standard housings are available in anodised aluminium or acetal, plus titanium for submerged marine use.
Data collected can be logged into the central memory, up to 32MB, or formatted for external transmission using RS232, 485 or 422, or UHF/VHF/GSM telemetry.
