Industrial Defender, the global cyber risk protection leader, announces Version 3.0 of its industry-leading risk mitigation technology suite for the real-time process control and SCADA environment

Enhanced features include support for Cisco and Secure Computing firewalls, intrusion detection for power substations and increased product scalability to better address the specific needs of this specialized industrial environment Industrial Defender V3.0 is the underlying technology for the company's comprehensive Cyber Risk Protection lifecycle platform, which includes risk assessment professional services, risk mitigation technology and risk management co-managed security service offerings

A unified and comprehensive cyber security solution has become increasingly important as power, energy, transportation, water, and chemical companies realize the need for protection against the increased volume and sophistication of cyber security threats.

In addition, utility companies can deploy solutions such as Industrial Defender to address 83 separate North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards, which became mandatory and enforceable on June 18, 2007, with penalties of up to USD1 million per day for non-compliance one year from now.

"As cyber security threats, industrial espionage and human error continue to intensify risk to mission-critical infrastructures, we are enhancing our platform to fully protect against the potentially catastrophic impact on business operations and public safety," said Brian M Ahern, president and CEO of Industrial Defender.

"A successful cyber attack in any of these industries can halt business, create massive blackouts or cause potential shortages of vital commodities, which could lead to environmental damage or human casualties".

Since most legacy systems were not designed with cyber security in mind, the V3.0 enhanced scalability and new capability for supporting Cisco and Secure Computing firewalls enables customers with new or existing process control systems to better protect their environment by implementing the technology that best fit their needs.

As a fully integrated "Defense-In-Depth" solution, Industrial Defender V3.0 allows customers to completely secure the real-time process control and SCADA environment.

This comprehensive offering secures the process control and SCADA environments with complete perimeter protection, gateway virus filtering, network/host intrusion detection and security event management.

Industrial Defender also helps companies meet regulatory compliance mandates and guidelines including ENISA, NERC CIP and NIST.

"Security programmes and needs of manufacturing, critical infrastructure and similar industries are maturing and this is solidifying requirements for security products" said Bob Mick, vice president, ARC Advisory Group: "Version 3.0 of Industrial Defender reflects these needs for a complete solution with increased scalability, consideration for legacy systems and a single view into security system elements.

Industrial Defender remains on track to serve the evolving needs of industrial customers".

Support for Cisco and Secure Computing firewalls.

Customers can now monitor and manage previously implemented firewalls, as well as newly installed Industrial Defender Guard firewalls from one console.

The added Cisco and Secure Computing support in Version 3.0 eliminates the need to separate cyber security or control systems for each different brand of firewall installed on the system.

In addition to the Industrial Defender Guard product, Version 3.0 will support Cisco Pix and Secure Computing CyberGuard Classic, SnapGear and Sidewinder firewalls.

Increased product scalability Industrial Defender V3.0 can now simultaneously monitor and manage up to 200 host systems, an increase in capacity that allows customers to scale their needs for monitoring operator workstations, engineering stations, process control historians and other process control systems - all with one unified application.

In addition, V3.0 is capable of handling an increased number of alerts, while maintaining network uptime and availability in the real-time process control and SCADA environment.

Added intrusion detection for power substations Industrial Defender continues to extend the depth of its product offering in the power industry with the introduction of industrial signatures for the IEC 61850 protocol, an international standard for substation automation.

By including these signatures in the Industrial Defender Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS), the NIDS appliance can detect potential malicious activity, such as port scans or unauthorised commands to substation automation equipment that use this industry protocol.

Enterprise-class NIDS solutions typically do not monitor industrial protocols used in critical infrastructure facilities such as substations and control centers.

Additional Industrial Defender V3.0 features.

* Remote Host Intrusion Detection System (HIDS) for engineering workstations, operator stations, SCADA servers, historians and other process control host systems that cannot have third party software deployed on them.

* Centrally configured and administered HIDS for easier deployment and maintenance, as well as additional administrative tools for importing and exporting configuration and log files from firewalls and HIDS devices.

* Performance enhancements to better handle the potentially high number of false positive alerts from enterprise class devices installed on a process control network.

Before implementing any cyber security program, Industrial Defender recommends that new customers undergo a security assessment to uncover system vulnerabilities and identify exact security needs.

Following the assessment program, Industrial Defender security experts will engineer specific security solutions for interoperability with legacy or new systems, as well as to integrate the real-time environment with enterprise security programs.

Industrial Defender V3.0 is available now.
