The requirement to pump solvent through a spray head in the vessel was proving difficult because of repetitive seal failures.

At Liquid Plastics a requirement to pump solvent through a spray head in the vessel was proving difficult because of repetitive seal failures on the pump shaft The solvent liquid is recycled and used several times until heavily contaminated by the product, and this forms a coating over the interior surface of the vessel

Traditionally Liquid Plastics used mechanical seals on the pump shafts, but the particulates rapidly build up on the seal faces, causing abrasion and seal hang up - resulting in seal failure and frequent leaks.

Alex Calderbank of Liquid Plastics discussed the problem with Verder, who suggested their latest series of balanced thrust mag drive pumps: these were then installed.

The TB Series of the Verder mag drive range have a unique zero thrust design and incorporate a rotating filter combined with silicon carbide shaft, bearings and internal wear rings, making them resistant to abrasion and excellent for handling fluid products loaded with small solids in suspension.

The requirement was to deliver 7.2m3/hr at 5 bar with provision to operate the unit through an inverter speed control.

By adjusting the speed discharge, pressures up to 12 bar can actually be achieved producing exceptional cleaning power.

Since installation, the TB50x32-200 7.5kw seal-less pump has operated reliably without problem.

Further refinements are being carried out to the system to overcome the spray head failing and requiring replacement because it cannot cope with the solids, which the pump is now able to circulate.

Future installations will incorporate the leak free Verder TB series pump and a revised spray ball configuration delivering a reliable, leak free, wash out system to the Liquid Plastics production facility.
