An Editorial preview of the five sections of PROCESS Worldwide (issue 3-2004), the European based English language worldwide magazine for the process industry

Plant and Apparatus Engineering Catalysts containing precious metals are employed in many chemical processing industry (CPI) applications to facilitate hydrogenation and other reactions of intermediates in order to speed production and help lower costs, and also for controlling or abating harmful or unlawful exhaust emissions such as VOCs for end-of-pipe applications

Most of these catalysts incorporate valuable precious metals; consider the current price of platinum, for example, at USD 767.

And because the catalysts lose their effectiveness after a few years, virtually all CPI facilities take keen interest in the disposition of their remaining precious metals.

Specifically, this includes working with specialised organisations that recover and refine them.

Maximising returns from these materials is more important than ever, not only because of their precious metals values but also to offset many of the high costs all CPI organisations confront daily; costs such as escalating operating expenses for utilities, capital equipment, labour, raw materials, taxes, etc These and other costs continue to erode an organisation's profitability.

Therefore, it is both practical and necessary to look at ways of reducing costs (or, conversely, adding profits) by scrutinising all possible sources of expenses and revenue generation at a CPI facility.

Pumps/Compressors.

The trend towards electronic pumps continues unabated.

Operators and manufacturers discuss trends in pump engineering.

The combination of variable-speed drives, sensors and integrated control technology enables pumps to be better adapted to the conditions of operation.

This reduces energy costs on the one hand and increases availability on the other - two advantages which promise to be well received by the operators of chemical plants.

But, as visitors to the Dechema colloquium "Pumps and Systems" on 11th March soon learned, technical arguments are not enough in themselves to convince plant operators.

This is thought more likely of economically attractive systems solutions.

Software/IT, Engineering/CAD.

Operations intelligence and real-time visibility.

Companies are having to accelerate their capital turnover times and react more and more rapidly to customer requirements because of global competition.

The prices of established products, which used to secure company results and therefore survival, decline when customers change their buying habits or the competition has compiled a better cost position.

This increases the pressure on companies and employees and requires new operating patterns, high cost transparency and micro control of processes despite the use of information technology.

The management of El Segundo refinery was also faced with these challenges when they introduced the IndX Software Corporation - A Siemens Company operations intelligence platform XHQ.

Thermal Processes.

A safe jump in temperature Plate heat exchangers made of high-grade materials in operation at Bulgaria's largest copper smelting complex.

Heat exchangers are mostly only one component within a multi-level plant complex, but a key component at that.

Without this sub-process many main processes would be impossible - as the example of several plate heat exchangers in a modern copper mill shows.

Made of special materials and based on many years of experience, these heat exchangers perform an important role in the gas cleaning system.
