Voith Turbo has developed a dual Redundant I/H Converter type DSM R2 for high availability Steam Turbine Drives, allowing duty/standby operation in critical plant areas.

The chemical and petrochemical industry have very exacting demands as to failure-free operation of its units.

Even the short breakdown of a production machine can cause a chemical reaction to be interrupted, and may affect the production from an entire day.

The production of fabricated materials in the manufacturing of synthetics, requiring the use of a compressor, serves as an example.

Frequently a steam turbine is used to drive this compressor.

Any failure, for example caused by a defective control system, would result in a lack of compressed gas and thus cause an interruption in the supply.

Very high availability is therefore obligatory for these drives.

Voith has developed an answer to this problem with the I/H Converter DSM R2, a device that contains two standard steam turbine channels, with automatic switch-over from duty to standby unit in the case of any failure.
