Industrial chargers protect batteries from damage
Lincoln-based PSU manufacturer VxI Power has introduced a new range of chargers that have been designed to protect batteries from damage during extended charging in demanding industrial applications
As well as offering environmental protection to IP65, the BCL series chargers produce a regulated and filtered charging voltage that allows them to be connected to a battery for extended periods without overcharging or damaging the battery.
Featuring cyclic 3-stage charging, the BCL units start the charging cycle at a voltage of either 14.4V or 28.8V, depending on model.
After a preset time or current level has been reached, they automatically switch to maintenance charging at a lower voltage.
All models carry the relevant European EMC and LVD approvals.
With a switching frequency of 9kHz, the chargers exhibit very low levels of EMI - unlike many switch-mode power supplies and chargers which operate at frequencies up to 148kHz and generate comparatively high levels of electromagnetic radiation.
This is an important feature when the units are used in advanced industrial systems where control buses and sensor systems could potentially be influenced by EMI.
Operating from an input voltage of 230VAC, the BCL series can be specified with charging currents of 6A or 15A for 12V batteries or 3A or 8A for 24V batteries.
The charger black moulded-aluminium enclosures are waterproof and shockproof, and the units come in two sizes measuring 80 x 125 x 35mm or 99 x 193 x 46mm and weighing 900g or 1700g respectively.
Detailed datasheets on the BCL series battery chargers can be found on the website.
