Westermo Data Communications have released a new fieldbus coupler with incorporated Profibus DP master that will enable remote Profibus networks to be connected to a central Profibus network via a range of comms without the need to install an additional PLC master The FD-20 is designed to provide a method of transferring Profibus I/O data over serial data links without the use of special drivers or PLC cards

RS485 products now handle high voltages
Enhanced repeater/isolators and converters are launched for RS485 applications: a bus technique that is the basis for most of the industrial communications systems installed over the last 20 years
The coupler is aimed at applications where there is a need to control a small number of Profibus slaves at a remote site and data from these must be transferred back to the main Profibus network.
The FD-20 contains a built in Profibus DP Master that can control a network of Profibus DP slaves connected to its fieldbus port.
The FD-20 is able to transfer Profibus DP data over leased line, dial up modems, Ethernet or radio systems.
Using a mix of FD-20 couplers and Westermo FD-10 (fieldbus coupler with Profibus DP Slave), a range of applications can be achieved.
Point-to-point transfer of defined Profibus I/0 data can be made using a FD-10P and a FD-20.
The transfer of Profibus I/O data from multiple remote Profibus networks requires a single Westermo FD-10 to act as the serial master and two or more connected FD-20 to control data exchange within the remote networks.
In addition using the Westermo ED-10 UDP coupler the remote Profibus network data can be transferred continuously over Ethernet making the data available anywhere in the world.
The FD-20 is fully compatible with Profibus DP standard (EN 50170) and can facilitate data transfer of up to 65 DP I/O words per cycle.
The unit can be configured within the limits set by the serial data rate.
It is easily configured with the FD-Tool, a Windows-based software tool.
The FD-20 also has RS-232 and RS-422/485 outputs.
