New shot blasting plant for surface
preparation

Market leading construction equipment manufacturer Thwaites has laid the foundations for further success by investing in a new shot blasting plant for surface preparation

Market leading construction equipment manufacturer Thwaites has laid the foundations for further success by investing in a new shot blasting plant The firm, based in Cubbington, near Leamington, which specialises in making dumper trucks, has ordered the new equipment from market leading surface preparation equipment specialist Wheelabrator Group

It will be used for descaling and preparing the surface of over 19,000 manufactured fabrications a year before they are painted, an important process to ensure a top quality finish on all products.

Bringing this work in-house will give Thwaites better control over manufacturing and the flexibility to process parts whenever required, leading to improved turnaround times and the creation of new jobs.

David Reed, engineering manager at Thwaites, said: "We believe the cost and time savings it offers will mean it will pay for itself in less than three years.

We undertook a competitive tendering process before deciding to buy the Spencer Tilghman M30/40 hook-type machine, complete with overhead conveyor, which is due to be installed in April.

Wheelabrator Group was chosen because of its long-established reputation and experience with large-scale machinery of this type.

Their team took the time to review our needs and their recommendations showed a complete understanding of the important role this machine would play in our overall business".

Lawson Pryke, technical director at Wheelabrator Group, said: "We're delighted to be working with the UK's leading dumper truck manufacturer and this order is a real vote of confidence in our team and products".

The cost of the machine is part of an overall GBP1 million investment in the Thwaites manufacturing plant over two years.

Founded in 1937, the company now employs 250 people at its Cubbington site and manufactures dumpers capable of carrying between one and nine tonnes.

Thwaites prides itself on the strength and reliability of its vehicles, emphasising advanced design and investment in tooling.

The company puts components through stringent tests before assembled dumpers go through final, pre-despatch inspection.

Thwaites dumpers are built with productivity, safety and ergonomics in mind and to emphasise high performance, durability and low operating costs.

The company has a reputation for innovation, having been the driving force behind the Kinglink centre articulation point in 1981 and hydraulically operated powerswivel skip in 1985.

It developed the first four-wheel drive articulated dumper in 1962 and has led the move to larger, more productive site vehicles of this type.

Thwaites is currently the only company manufacturing a dumper that can lift a load, swivel it through 180 degrees and dump it at a height of 1.7m.

Wheelabrator Group owns, designs, manufactures and provides wheelblast, airblast and mass finishing equipment for surface preparation and cleaning, and serves a range of sectors, including the aerospace and automotive industries. Request a free brochure from Wheelabrator Group ...
