New non-destructive leak tester for packaging
Witt Gas Techniques has introduced a new system for non-destructive testing for leaks in individual flexible and rigid food and pharmaceutical packaging based on CO2 detection technology
Being non-destructive and using CO2 for leakage detection, any defective packages can be returned to the line for re-packaging.
These machines were retrofitted to existing lines and were used to test the seal integrity of complete boxes of product, containing up to 12 packs.
The trials lasted two weeks and both companies were able to pinpoint individual leakages in their packaging, thereby reducing the number of customer returns and help keep costs down.
The identified faulty packaging was returned to the line for instant re-packaging.
This system has a compact testing chamber and is only 1.8m long and can therefore be easily fitted into most existing lines immediately after the packaging process.
Because it can operate at up to 15 cycles per minute, it will not impede on the speed of the line.
It can test both complete cartons or individual packages.
Carl Long, General Manager at Witt Gas in Warrington said: "Leak-Master MAPmax is new and is the very latest in packaging leak detection technology and is able to check 100% of packaging from a specific line.
These are the first machines in the UK and the reports we have had are very positive, with both companies saying that the equipment has fulfilled their requirements.
Importantly both companies, through the equipment analysis software, have been able to download the results into their quality control data systems".
