Calcium removal system to save industry
thousands
An environmentally friendly water-conditioning product is thought to be a world first in its ability to remove calcium from water pipes and prevent the build up of lime-scale
An environmentally friendly water-conditioning product, built and developed in the West Midlands with the support of the Black Country Chamber, is thought to be a world first in its ability to remove calcium from water pipes and prevent the build up of lime-scale The 'OASIS', invented and developed by Waterite UK, is designed to soften water and eliminate scaling

Solving hard water and lime scale problems
Waterite techniques, applying ultrasound into water, first reported in Processingtalk in July, have already revolutionised how manufacturers can deal with hard water and lime scale problems
Ultrasonic water softener for pipe-cleaning
Hard water problems can be solved quickly with a non intrusive ultrasonic water softening system that works without chemicals, salt or filters to prevent limescale and improve water quality.
The product which is released to the UK market this month uses a non-intrusive system to pass ultrasonic waves through the fluid pipes, which prevents particles of calcium from attaching to the pipe surfaces and joints.
The benefits to industry of installing the OASIS are thought to be substantial, particularly where calcium builds up on cooling towers, process equipment, hoses, and water and effluent pipes.
OASIS is an environmentally friendly product, which removes the need for water softeners and salt.

The OASIS removes existing scale and in doing so increases the efficiency of water flow within a system resulting in cost savings by, for example, reducing water-heating time.
Sulphate, chlorine and fluoride smells along with iron discolouration are also drastically reduced or removed altogether.
The initial principles behind this revolutionary system were stumbled on while Tony Allen, Managing Director of Waterite UK, was looking to develop a current project with support from Black Country Chamber.
'For many years I used a similar system in the pub trade to ensure that beer pipes stayed clean.
I always thought that the principle had far greater potential.
With funding from the Black Country Chamber's Trade Partners UK programme and a good deal of lateral thinking, we developed a system which can be used in many other industries!' Pilot projects for OASIS have been a great success.
The initial application of OASIS at Wolverhampton University print shop is estimated to have saved the company around GBP1000 per year per press.
On a much larger scale the printing house for the Tampa Tribute newspaper, the leading news publication in the US state of Florida, is experiencing significant benefits where the system has kept the water bath solution clear and removed the need for any pH enhancing chemicals.
Tony Allen has high hopes for the OASIS as it goes on the market next month.
'I truly believe we have a world first here.
The OASIS has huge potential; in fact I am currently in talks with the University of Central England, through the EBG funded T.I.C project, where researchers are investigating the capability of the system to eliminate bacteria from piped water.
It is incredible to see how an initially modest cleaning system is developing into a device that could make so much difference to industry and householders'.
The development of OASIS in the West Midlands is just one local project, which has benefited from support sourced by the Black Country Chamber and Business Link through the Environmental Technologies Cluster.
Small and medium sized businesses in the West Midlands seeking help and support with an environmental technologies (ET) project would be wise to contact Black Country Chamber and Business Link.
Their website acts as a portal for researchers and businesses in the ET sector to share information and do business.
By signing up to one of the industry Performance Networks through the site, valuable relationships and business partnership can be made and a framework put in place to develop and exploit market opportunities.
