Ozone has become increasing popular as a sterilising agent for the final rinse and sterilisation of bottles within the drinks industry

Many beverage and soft drinks bottling companies have recently made the switch to using Waterwise Ozone Systems for sterilisation and final rinse of bottles and containers during the bottling process The reasons for so many bottling plants making the change are clear, according Jon Fielder, Technical Director of Waterwise Technology Limited, Thame

"Ozone is produced electronically from the oxygen in the air and mixed with water provides a powerful and safe sterilising agent, with no risk of chemical contamination or taint".

The benefits of the system have also been seen by Purity Soft Drinks, who installed a Waterwise Ozone System following a full scale trial.

Mike Cox, Purity Production Director comments: "The quality of drinks is always at risk with potentially contaminated bottles from outside suppliers; this equipment has given us peace of mind, knowing that the bottles are washed and fully sterilised immediately before filling, eliminating risks to product quality.

The use of ozonated water to routinely wash-down and clean the filling machine has also helped us make improvements to all cleanliness and hygiene standards in the products area.

The great advantage of ozone is that these benefits are being achieved without having chemicals around the filling processes".

Because no chemicals are used in the process, the ozone introduces no risk of product contamination or need for flushing.

Containers can be filled immediately after sterilising with ozonated water, avoiding any risk of recontamination.

Any residual ozone present on the internal surfaces or in the residual moisture will not affect even sensitive products such as wine or spring water.

It breaks down rapidly, completely disappearing after 20 minutes and leaving no chemical residue and no negative environmental impacts.

In fact, Jon Fielder of Waterwise claims "No other disinfectant can give such a powerful effect against all bacteria, viruses, cyst and algae without risk to the final product.

It is the most environmentally friendly disinfection method you can have.

Ozone effectively destroys organisms such as Fusarium Oxysporum, a fungal organism which is frequently found to contaminate new bottles and containers and is thought to originate from the cardboard packaging used in the storage and transport of bottles and containers".

As many bottling plants have discovered, the system is easily integrated into normal production lines and means that companies such as Purity Soft Drinks, have the security of knowing all containers are hygienically and safely sterilised, any dust and debris which may have entered the containers during transit and storage is completely removed before filling.

The use of Ozone systems is by no means limited to bottling plants, and many food preparation and pharmaceutical companies are also among those also evaluating the benefits of the system.
