Modern boilers installed in the West Sussex County Hall caused excessive disturbance to 20 years of system sediment: the suspended solids were successfully removed with a Cobra Cyclone Separator

After twenty years of continuous service the original boiler installation at the County Hall of West Sussex County Council finally needed replacing The very latest condensing boilers were duly installed to improve efficiency at the jewel in the Council's property portfolio

Unfortunately, the installation caused a disturbance in the balance of the system, resulting in heavy suspended solids being released into the re-circulating water.

The system was not performing efficiently and filter blockage problems became so acute that the system filters had to be cleaned twice a day.

On the recommendation of a local M and E contractor a Cobra Cyclone Separator from Waterwise Technology was installed to reduce the suspended solids in the re-circulating water.

Within three months there was a marked improvement in performance in both the efficiency of the boilers and the reduced blockages of the filters.

In less than twelve months the filter bags only needed to be changed once a week.

To complete the full efficiency of the system the local chemical water treatment company implemented a 'cleaning and flushing' regime.

However, this clean would not have been effective without the Cobra Cyclone Separator first removing all the debris accumulated from twenty years of service.

Commenting on the problems of suspended solids in closed circuit water systems, Ian Roylance General Manager of Waterwise Technology explained "Dirt, debris, swarf, welding splatter and mill-scale are all incorporated into closed circuit water systems during construction.

Due to the complexity of pipe-work design in modern buildings it is often impossible to remove all this contamination by pre-commission cleaning and flushing alone.

Suspended solids and sludge also continue to accumulate in systems during their working life due to corrosion, hard water and system modification.

Corrosion of mild steel typically produces sediment volumes of 10 to 100 times the volume of the original metal removed.

Heating systems typically make up 1.5 to 2.5%of the system volume per week.

For a 10,000 litre volume system in a hard water area this will lead to more than 3kg of solids accumulating in the system per year".

Although frequently described as filters, cylones are technically dirt separators which use centrifugal action to remove suspended solids or dirt.

A Waterwise Cobra Cyclone Separator will remove suspended solids and debris particles from a system down to less than 20 microns in size, ensuring systems achieve and maintain performance with the minimum of maintenance throughout their working life.
