The Northern Power Station is a coal-fired plant located in Port Augusta, South Australia.
The plant has a generating capacity of 520MW (2 x 260MW) and has been in operation since 1985.
Flinders Power has now embarked on a programme to replace the plant control system, including the turbines, boilers, and other accessories.
The refurbishment of the first unit is planned for completion in 2009, delivering reduced operating costs and increased reliability.
Yokogawa will provide Flinders Power with a distributed control system (Centum CS 3000), an integrated device management tool (PRM: Plant Resource Manager), differential pressure transmitters (DPharp EJA, EJX), and a safety instrumented system (ProSafe-RS).
Yokogawa will also support all engineering, installation, construction, and test operations.
TechComm Simulation, a wholly-owned Yokogawa subsidiary, will contribute to the project by providing Flinders Power with a plant simulator for test operations and operator training.
Yokogawa was successful in winning this project because of the extensive experience of coal-fired thermal power plants in Yokogawa Australia; the company's involvement in the successful refurbishment of the Flinders Playford Thermal Power Station, also in Port Augusta; the quality of Yokogawa products; and the Yokogawa ability to supply a full replica power plant simulator.
In recent years, Yokogawa has been awarded a number of other major power plant refurbishment projects, including Eraring and Loy Yang.
This latest success will contribute to the Yokogawa reputation as the prominent provider of control systems to the Australian power generation sector.
